Global politics loom over Oscar foreign film event (omg!)
BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - Nominees for the best foreign language film Oscar gathered on Saturday for an annual symposium to discuss their films, but a cloud of global politics loomed over the event in which Iranian and Israeli filmmakers both took part.
One day earlier in Los Angeles, Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, whose divorce drama "A Separation" is an Oscar nominee, missed an award-related event saying he was ill, prompting reports in the Israeli media that he might be avoiding them and the director of Israel's nominee, "Footnote."
For Saturday's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences event, Farhadi did not pose for news photographers outside - although his actors did - and during the symposium, he and "Footnote" maker Joseph Cedar sat at opposite ends of the panel.
Afterward, he was whisked away before reporters could talk to him and taken to another event, the Independent Spirit Awards, where "A Separation" won best international movie. But Farhadi appeared only onstage and not in a backstage press room.
The Iranian government has treated some of its country's filmmakers such as Jafar Panahi harshly in recent years. Farhadi has said in past interviews he was not censored in making his movie, and it is impossible to know whether he feels government pressure now. But his fellow filmmakers said they understood his dilemma in meeting with the western media.
"If he (Farhadi) doesn't want to talk to the press, I can appreciate that," Canadian director Philippe Falardeau, whose "Monsieur Lazhar" also is nominated, told Reuters. "I can say a lot of stupid things to the press and I won't get in trouble for that back home. That's not his case."
Cedar declined comment when approached by Reuters to ask whether he and Farhadi had a chance to meet and talk about their respective Oscar-nominated movies.
HUMANITY, NOT POLITICS
For weeks in interviews leading up to the Academy Awards, both filmmakers have stressed that their movies are about families and human issues - not politics - and at Saturday's symposium, they continued to focus on cinema over politics.
Farhadi's "A Separation," which has won numerous awards this year, opens with a couple seeking a divorce being dismissed by a judge who tells them their problems are too small. As the movie plays out, many people become involved in their private affair.
"The problem with smaller problems is that you can't really see them," Farhadi told a packed house. "The big problems are so big that at least you can see it and identify it."
Cedar found inspiration for "Footnote," about an estranged father and son relationship, in his own life. The director told the audience he remembered receiving a call from the Italian embassy in Jerusalem saying they would like to present him with an award honoring the 60th anniversary of Israel's founding.
But over time, he came to suspect the award was instead intended for his father, a prominent bio-chemist, and from that experience came "Footnote," in which a similar mix up occurs.
Likewise, Belgian filmmaker Michael Roskam drew from real life for his debut feature, "Bullhead" about a psychically wounded cattle farmer who runs afoul of a deadly crime ring.
"In my country we were actually confronted with the existence of the Belgian hormone mafia," said Roskam who went on to describe the real-life execution of an investigator at the hands of outlaws, an incident mirrored in "Bullhead."
Nominated in 1992 for "Europa Europa," Agnieszka Holland originally turned down the chance to direct this year's Polish nominee, "In Darkness."
"It was the worst shoot of my lifetime," she said about her movie, which takes place in the sewers of the Polish city of Lvov where Jews hid during Nazi occupation.
Holland and her cast spent long hours in the darkness and stench of real sewers to achieve greater verisimilitude. "So you understand why I would turn it down," she laughed. "I have some experience and I could imagine what it would mean to me physically and psychologically to make this film."
Falardeau's "Monsieur Lazhar" tells of a one-man play about an Algerian schoolteacher in Montreal who must help his students come to terms with their former teacher's suicide.
Although he is happy to be nominated and proud of his movie, Falardeau confessed he thinks "A Separation" should win. "I would vote for 'A Separation,'" he said. "I think it's not only the best film, I think it's the film that has to win."

SEATTLE (AP) ? A former girlfriend of a man who killed a Washington state trooper has been arrested for trying to help him evade capture, the Kitsap County sheriff's office said Friday.
The sheriff's office didn't immediately release the woman's name, but jail and court records show that it is Jessi Leigh Foster, 32, the mother of one of Joshua Blake's children. Blake, an ex-con with a history of antagonizing police, shot and killed Trooper Tony Radulescu early Thursday morning during a traffic stop, then committed suicide with a single shot to the head hours later.
Shortly after the trooper's death, Blake called Foster and told her he did something bad and needed help to escape, sheriff's Sgt. Ken Dickinson told a news conference.
She met him at a home on a dirt road a few miles away, where she pressed him on what he had done, he said, and even after Blake acknowledged that he "shot a cop," she continued trying to help.
"She was actively trying to find a way for him to get out of the area," Dickinson said.
She was still in the home with him when he killed himself as a SWAT team closed in, Dickinson said. She was arrested for investigation of rendering criminal assistance; bail was set at $500,000.
It was not immediately clear if she had a lawyer.
She and Blake had tussled in court over custody of their young child. In court papers he wrote that she had a severe drinking problem and was unstable. In response, a friend of hers, Carole Gonzalez, wrote that Foster was a loving mother and that Blake was never around the child because he had been incarcerated.
The slain trooper was Tony Radulescu, a Romanian immigrant and 16-year veteran of the patrol who had the respect of his peers and was popular in his community.
"It's a terrible thing to receive a phone call that one of your people is injured in line of duty. To have that compounded with a loss, it's a bad day," Patrol Chief John R. Batiste said.
Radulescu, who served his entire career in the area, spoke five languages ? a huge asset in investigating car theft rings with Eastern European ties, said Kitsap County Sheriff Steve Boyer, who knew him well.
"He was cautious. He practiced good officer safety," the sheriff said, his eyes misting as he spoke Thursday. "Sometimes the odds are just against you."
Radulescu was a military veteran with a son in the area who is a soldier, Patrol Chief John Batiste said at an early morning news conference at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was well-known and popular in the community where he often spoke in schools, Batiste said.
Boyer said Radulescu would be remembered for his warmth.
"He could write somebody a ticket and they'd say 'thank you,' " Boyer said.
Radulescu stopped Blake's truck around 1 a.m. on Highway 16. He radioed the location and license plate number.
When Radulescu didn't respond to dispatcher status checks, a Kitsap County sheriff's deputy went to the scene and found the fatally wounded trooper outside his patrol car.
Three hours later, officers found the truck abandoned on a county road near Port Orchard, about two miles from the shooting scene.
Investigators received a tip on where to find the registered owner and went to the home.
According to Kitsap County court records, Blake was convicted for assaulting his then-pregnant girlfriend in 2004 as he drove down a street under the influence of alcohol. His girlfriend at the time was not Foster. After being arrested, he kicked out the window of a patrol car.
Later that year, after the baby was born, he choked the woman and punched her in the face repeatedly because she asked him to watch the child while she took a nap.
In 2008, a Port Orchard officer tried to pull him over for a minor traffic infraction. He sped off at 60 mph, crashed into another police car and then ran off. As officers pursued him, he returned to his car and sped away again ? only to later be caught when a sheriff's office dog team chased him up a tree.
Department of Corrections spokesman Chad Lewis said Blake was a handful both for prison officials and for community corrections officers who tried to supervise him. He completed a 2?-year prison term in early 2010, and last spring he served two months for failing to check in with his community corrections officer. His term of supervision ended last August, Lewis said.

ANALYSIS: Santorum's campaign takes the direct approach by using Romney's own words against him in an ad released days before Michigan's GOP presidential primary on Tuesday. The spot stands out for its stylistic choices. It's effectively a silent film; no narration, just dramatic sound effects designed to get the viewer's attention.
But as content goes, it's fairly standard attack-ad fare. Citing a variety of media, the ad seeks to chip away at Romney's conservative credentials, mostly by highlighting the former Massachusetts governor's past comments.
Romney did say he doesn't line up with the National Rifle Association. He did support abortion rights in previous runs for office, though never as a presidential candidate. A Romney adviser also did say the health care plan Romney put in place in Massachusetts was the basis for the national plan President Barack Obama signed into law nearly two years ago.
But two of Santorum's claims are questionable.
Fees and taxes did increase under Romney's leadership in Massachusetts. But Romney, for the most part, fought off tax increases while in office. He advocated a reduction in income taxes, which won him plaudits from anti-tax groups. He did raise business taxes by $140 million and approved millions of dollars in new fees and fines, which makes Santorum's claim technically true but not the whole story.
As governor and in his tenure running the 2002 Olympics in Utah, Romney did seek earmarks, or targeted spending, from Congress. But Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator who secured millions of dollars in earmarks for his states and who defended the practice during a recent GOP debate, is hardly untarnished on this issue. Romney and Santorum both have said they would seek to end the practice of earmarks if elected.
Santorum's decision to air his second negative Romney ad reflects the reality of the race in Michigan. Santorum, who had led in many polls in the state, has begun to see his lead shrink and is fighting back. If he's to continue to build on momentum from recent victories in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, he will have to defeat Romney in Michigan. Romney's supporters have spent millions on ads attacking Santorum's record.

News and Society -Crime News Blog: Organizational Sexual Abuse ...
With all the child-abuse indictments appearing in the news these days (in Boy Scouts, churches, schools, football teams), the question is - are we and our organizational leaders failing them? Without saying, these crimes are subtle and difficult to handle to start with. They are cleverly camouflaged and done in secret. Also, major backlash can occur if people are accused falsely.
Such organizational issues also require legal protection from fraudulent lawsuits merely seeking money from them. Also, any unfounded accusations of suspects can become liabilities and lawsuits themselves. Thus, our leaders must carefully find valid evidence to fix them.
A real indictment
Recently, a Kansas City Star Newspaper editorial explained how a conscientious diocesan priest pursued a child-abuse allegation of a clergyman in 2004. Within days the suspect clergyman was confronted by his bishop, and was subsequently suspended from his duties at two parishes.
Less than a month later, however, an independent review by the diocese and local authorities concluded these allegations were unfounded - no real evidence. The suspect priest was then reassigned. Such investigations can bite back when done without enough evidence.
Seven years later (2011), the same investigative priest (now a much higher-ranking one) was indicted by the county prosecutor for not reporting suspected child abuse to the authorities as soon as required by law. The initial evidence in this case came from a computer repair technician who found a pornographic child photograph on the suspect clergyman's laptop. Yet, this slower investigation did turn up the needed evidence to prosecute the suspect. But the investigative priest was still indicted. Is this situational paradoxical?
Four factors considered in such situations
1. To investigate internally or from the outside. Organizational administrators probably should not be investigating their own administrators. Inherently, they could be too lenient. Also, if an investigation from the outside gets carried away, anyone inside could be prosecuted under flimsy charges. Still, the outside investigations do offset a common tendency for organizations to coverup abuse crimes.
2. Hard proof. To start an investigation, the administrative authorities need more proof than anonymous phone tips or inconsistent verbal evidence. Within many organizations, competitive attempts to defame people occur all the time. Thus, if a real investigation is warranted, it can move forward quietly with the simultaneous goals of getting the real proof while protecting the innocent. It can also prevent unnecessary entrapment.
A short abstract at the link below says 77% of the successful child-abuse prosecutions from a select study were done without physical evidence. Thus, the basic proof needed for such prosecutions include detailed affidavits, consistent verbal witnesses, diaries/journals, photographs on cameras/computers, recordings, and valid confessions.
3. Damage from scandal. Will the resultant charges affect the organization negatively? Will it cause scandal, damaged imagery, employment issues, membership and budget losses, or general destruction. Or, will it merely puncture its so-called image slightly, and then bring about a much better system thereafter?
4. Strong civil law. Certain organizations have strict guidelines for dealing and interacting with children. As a result, proven child-abuse criminals must be turned over to the authorities. Any internal notions of correcting child abusers through 1) scoldings/warnings and punishments, 2) rehabilitating them with medication and counseling, or 3) reassigning them where they can do no harm are no longer valid. Criminal acts do not correct themselves informally.
Conclusion. Too much systematic corruption and criminal coverup from child sex abuse has already occurred in organizations, leaving the victimized children and their families in the lurch. In the future, the top leaders of these organizations must prevent or stop these abuse crimes early. The proven child abusers must be immobilized and criminally tried in public view.

US stocks fall as Greek talks lumber; Apple falls (AP)
NEW YORK ? Stocks slumped Wednesday in one of their worst showings this year as Greece, slogging through negotiations with other countries over a bailout, once again cast a long shadow over the financial markets.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 109 points at its lowest level of the day before bouncing back to 12,793, down 85 points. The Dow has not suffered a triple-digit loss this year.
The Standard & Poor's 500 and the Nasdaq composite index, after climbing tentatively through the morning, gave up their gains. The S&P was down five points to 1,345. The Nasdaq was down six points to 2,926.
The declines were broad, with all 10 industry groups in the S&P falling.
Apple shares went on a wild zigzag. After closing Tuesday at a record, $509.46 per share, they seemed destined to set another Wednesday, rising as high as $526.29. But the stock fell sharply at midday and was down $3.60 at $505.98.
The decline appeared to be caused by rumors that a powerful exchange-traded fund that tracks Nasdaq stocks would sell Apple. Funds sometimes do that when one stock rises so much that it makes up an outsized slice of the fund's portfolio.
Invesco PowerShares, which runs the fund, known as the QQQ, didn't immediately return a call and email seeking comment.
Greece loomed over the market again, as it has for weeks. It is trying to secure a second international bailout so it won't default on its debt next month and rattle the global financial system.
On Wednesday, European finance ministers planned a conference call to discuss Greece, and a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel sharply rejected rumors in financial markets that Germany had decided a Greek bankruptcy was acceptable.
For weeks, incremental movement in the Greek crisis has whipsawed U.S. stocks. Minor developments, like a vague commitment from China to buy European bonds or a report that a Greek party leader would agree to spending cuts, moved the market.
"Long story short, we long for the days when markets traded on fundamentals," said David Katz, principal at WeiserMazars Wealth Advisors. He thinks stock picks have been ruled by emotion, rather than clear-eyed examinations of companies' balance sheets, at least since the credit crunch in 2007 and the ensuing Great Recession.
"Just as quickly as you see the market pop up from one headline, then you see the downturn from another," Katz said. "It doesn't really have to be (big news). It's not even the meat of the story, it's the headline."
Greece makes up just 2 percent of the total economic output of the 17 countries that use the euro. But investors are troubled by the fallout from a default and similar financial problems festering in other European countries, like Portugal, Italy and Spain.
"There is no shortage of people who would argue that Greece is a non-event," said Dan McMahon, director of equity trading at Raymond James. "It's more that it's a barometer for the rest of the eurozone."
Among the biggest movers in the U.S. market:
? Comcast, the cable provider, climbed 5 percent after beating Wall Street expectations for profit and revenue. It managed to slow the loss of customers as it added channels and better customer service.
? Kellogg rose 5 percent after announcing it would buy Pringles from Procter & Gamble. Diamond Foods had a deal to buy Pringles but got caught up in an accounting scandal that forced it to get rid of its top two executives last week. P&G was flat, and Diamond was up 7 percent.
? Abercrombie & Fitch soared 10 percent after the teen clothing store gave more details on its plans for opening more stores overseas, where profit margins can be higher because customers expect fewer clearance sales.
? Zynga, the maker of popular Facebook games like Farmville, plummeted 14 percent after saying it lost money in the fourth quarter and analysts said its growth was slowing significantly. Zynga went public in December.

The Golden Rule ? The Practical Side - Life Enhancement ...
Treat others as you want them to treat you.? Most of us know the Golden Rule, even if we do not practice it as often as we should. ??This rule encourages us to treat others with the dignity and respect humanity deserves.? By doing this, we aim to inspire others to act in positive ways in the hope that everyone ?involved may gain the most out of their life experiences and relationships.? The Golden Rule can be helpful in all relationships, including therapeutic ones.? A therapeutic relationship consists of the relationship between the therapist and client(s).? Therapeutic relationships differ from everyday relationships in many ways and especially because the client is disclosing very personal information.? Nonetheless, the client (and therapist) can still benefit from employing the Golden Rule.? Below are some ?Golden Rules of Therapy? the client may wish to follow:
Arrive on time and early if necessary (for example, to complete paperwork).? Clients should arrive 20 minutes early to the initial session to complete intake paperwork.
Silence or turn off your cell phone and place out of sight to reduce interruptions.
If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment please do so no less than 24 hours in advance.? This is not only respectful to the therapist, but opens up your appointment time to someone who may need it.? Not cancelling within 24 hours of your appointment time will result in you being charged for that session.

Keep your contact and insurance information up to date.
?
Complete between session assignments.
?
Come prepared.? Be ready to talk about setbacks and progress since your last session.? Be able to share examples of things you have learned in therapy and applied to real life.? For example, if you learned a new communication skill, be able to tell how you used it with a friend or partner.

Understand that various therapy styles and techniques are used depending on the issue at hand.

Ask questions or seek clarification if you do not understand something.

Be open and honest in order to gain the most from your therapeutic experience.
