Zimmerman to ask Florida judge for bond ? again

A judge will weigh several factors Friday in deciding whether to set bond for the neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

Is George Zimmerman a threat to the community? Is he a flight risk? And maybe most importantly, can Zimmerman persuade the judge he will not be deceptive again?

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester revoked George Zimmerman's $150,000 bond earlier this month when prosecutors told the judge Zimmerman and his wife misled the court about how much money they had during an April bond hearing.

Prosecutors said a website Zimmerman created for his legal defense had raised $135,000 at the time of his first bond hearing. Zimmerman and his wife did not mention the money then, and Shellie Zimmerman even said the couple had limited resources because she was a student and wasn't working.

Prosecutors also said the couple talked in code during recorded jailhouse conversations about how to transfer the donations to different bank accounts. At one point, George Zimmerman asked how much money they had. She replied "$155." Prosecutors allege that was code for $155,000. Their reference to "Peter Pan" was code for the PayPal system through which the donations were made, prosecutors said.

Shellie Zimmerman has since been charged with perjury. She is out of jail on $1,000 bond and her arraignment is set for July 31.

Legal experts say Zimmerman needs a good explanation to convince the judge to let him out of jail again while he awaits trial.

"If his explanation is really weak ... I think Lester could keep him in jail," said Randy McClean, an Orlando-area defense attorney who is following the case. "If he really comes across as being genuine and has a reasonable explanation, because I don't see how it could be a great explanation, then I think Lester will probably pump up the conditions, up his monetary conditions and let him back on bond."

Working in Zimmerman's favor, the judge has said, is he turned himself in when charges were filed and kept law enforcement informed of his location when he went into hiding because of threats against him and his family. Weighing against him is the seriousness of the charge as well as other brushes with the law, including an arrest for resisting an undercover officer.

Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting 17-year-old Martin on Feb. 26 at a gated apartment community in Sanford. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty and claims the shooting was self-defense under the state's "stand your ground" law.

Martin's parents and supporters claim the teenager was targeted because he was black and Zimmerman started the confrontation that led to the shooting. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.

The 44 days between the shooting and Zimmerman's arrest inspired nationwide protests, led to the departure of the Sanford police chief and prompted a U.S. Department of Justice probe.

Zimmerman's attorney has argued in court papers that he is no threat to the public and proved he wasn't a flight risk by returning to jail when his bond was revoked. Attorney Mark O'Mara also argued that the bulk of the more than $200,000 raised by the website has now been turned over to a third-party administrator and Zimmerman has no control over the money.

Putting the money in a trust was smart because "now you can argue that the client does not have direct access to that money to flee the jurisdiction of the court," said Blaine McChesney, an Orlando criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor.

Prosecutors have also argued Zimmerman had a second passport he didn't tell the judge about, but the judge dismissed any worries about it, comparing it to when somebody loses a driver's license, applies for another one and then finds the old license.

McChesney said there is a good chance the judge will deny bond, in part because of the jailhouse recordings about the money transfers.

"It shows a premeditated intent to hide that," McChesney said.

The only witnesses O'Mara has listed are two bail bondsmen. But at the last hearing, Zimmerman surprised many people by taking the stand himself and apologizing to Martin's family.

It may be up to only Zimmerman to re-establish his credibility with the judge, whether he testifies or his lawyer talks for him.

"Credibility is an issue. So O'Mara is going to certainly have to make apologies or Zimmerman will have to make apologies for what happened, and they're going to have to convince the court that he is a good bond risk," Karin Moore, a law professor at Florida A&M University College of Law in Orlando.

Flavorwire ? The Unexpected Movies of Famous Filmmakers

We were all a little surprised when we heard that Steven Soderbergh?s next film was Magic Mike, a beefcake comedy/drama inspired by star Channing Tatum?s early days as a male stripper, and its trailers have been a little worrisome, at least in terms of what we?ve come to expect from even Mr. Soderbergh?s more crowd-pleasing efforts. Thankfully, the film itself is an enjoyably fizzy and funny entertainment ? and, true to form, Soderbergh keeps things interesting by making the entire picture into a sly subversion of traditional on-screen gender roles.

Soderbergh is far from the first famous filmmaker who threw audiences for a loop by directing a film that seemed far removed from their usual style; after the jump, we?ve got ten other directors and the out-of-character movies they made.

David Lynch, The Straight Story

Lynch is a filmmaker who has carefully cultivated a body of work that is, to say the least, a little weird. From Eraserhead to Blue Velvet to Twin Peaks to Wild at Heart, the Lynch universe is one of frothing freaks and fever dreams ? not the stuff of G-rated Walt Disney movies. But that?s exactly what he made in 1999, when he directed The Straight Story, a film co-written by his wife (and frequent producer) Mary Sweeney, based on a true story. Richard Farnsworth stars as Alvin Straight, a wily old coot who takes a 240-mile journey on a tractor (his vision is too poor for a driver?s license) to visit his dying, estranged brother. It?s a charming, likable picture, with a marvelous, Oscar-nominated performance by Farnsworth, but watching it is a bit unnerving; you keep waiting for the idyllic events on-screen to take a dark, Lynchian turn, for Sissy Spacek to discover an ear or for Farnsworth to start talking backwards. Lynch later said that Straight was ?my most experimental movie,? which sounds like a gag, until you realize that, for the guy whose brain hatched Eraserhead, The Straight Story probably seems like pretty far-out stuff.

Thrifty Thursday Slow-Cooker White Bean Stew Recipe: Healthy and ...

What is it with so many people claiming eating healthy is expensive? Yeah, maybe when you go and buy organic doughnuts and poptarts, but that?s hardly healthy anyway. Not everything has to be organic, either. I feel choosing something with little to no processing is usually the better choice.

When I use the convenience of slow-cooker cooking, most of the veggies I use are frozen and not organic. You can find frozen store brand produce for cheap, and I stock up on these each week. If I need a quick dose of veggies, I just put a mix in a microwavable dish, cover, and steam in the microwave for a few minutes. Add several herbs and spices plus some tasty brown mustard and mix it all together?.wham! Healthy eating in minutes for pennies on the dollar.

Frozen veggies, good; frozen meals, bad. I can?t stand seeing people open their Lean Cuisine or SmartOnes meal, tear a slit in the plastic covering, and set the timer to nuke for ?X? amount of minutes. Then stir and cook a little more. Boo. If you really have no time, at least buy the microwavable bags of frozen vegetable mixes (beware of added salt and creamy sauces) and have some salsa to mix in once cooked. There are plenty of frozen mixed veggie medleys with beans for a healthy dose of protein.

Canned tuna or salmon in water is another easy add-in. Be creative and fast, people, it?s your health! Do you ever see people with their frozen meals and want to just tell them how easy it is to eat something better? It shouldn?t bother me, but this is my passion and for some reason I care. Sue me??.ok, don?t. Please, don?t.

Microwaving frozen vegetables seriously helps cut down the time I spend cooking meals for Kelley and me to bring for work lunch. I try to keep it varied to avoid meal monotony, but Kelley says she?d rather spend time with me than me taking longer in the kitchen. I still end up taking a long time though; I think I have a kitchen addiction. I could have no reason to be in there, but I?ll make sure to find something. Anyone else ever do this?

Back to the slow-cooker. Today?s recipe is simple and very easy to change the ingredients to suit your preferences. You can make it vegan, vegetarian, or add meat if you choose. I actually added tilapia filets on top of everything in the cooker and then served them with a baked sweet potato and broccoli. This is another time saver tip; cooking food for 2 different meals in the same pot. It may not always be extravagant eating, but if it tastes good and is healthy, your body will thank you. And Kelley thanks me too??.unless I added too much cayenne. I didn?t think that?s possible!

I must cut today?s post short as I?m short on time. Balancing my job, exercise, meal prep, and quality time can be hard, but I feel it?s more than worth it when it comes to health. I make my food to be in control of my health, and am always up to help give advice to anyone who wants it. That?s the hard part, most people I see don?t want to hear they are doing the wrong thing. Ok, I?m stopping before I go on another rant.

globalEDGE Blog: Business Ethics Taught by a White Collar Criminal?

According to Merriam Webster's Dictionary, ethics is the principles of conduct governing an individual or a group. This is an interpretive definition; it changes depending on culture, and that is why teaching ethics for a globalizing economy is rather difficult for current business schools.

A great example of the difference in ethics is the use of bribery. In some countries, the practice of bribery is acceptable, to lube the gears of government in order to get approval for certain business ventures. Recently, Walmart was accused of bribery in Mexico to attain build permits for new stores, but it also runs rampant in India, China, and Russia. Keep in mind that three of those countries are included in the BRIC countries.

The question that needs to be addressed is how do we teach our future CEOs of global businesses how to act ethically?

As an accounting student of the B-school here at Michigan State University, we, like many other business schools, learned ethics through a white collar criminal. He has short white hair, dressed well, and in his 50?s. His name, Andrew Fastow. Once the financial director of Enron, now the ethics ?professor? of many business schools worldwide. He told his story and asked what we would have done in his shoes. His talk fostered debates on where one would cross the line. It made the topic real and tangible, something not easy to accomplish using PowerPoints.

Ethics is something hard to be taught. There is no hard and fast rule for determining if a decision is ethical. Regulations, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, have not prevented fraud. Enron, like other failed companies, viewed the complexity of the rules as an opportunity to game the system. As the world is globalizing, we need to concentrate on ethics teachings more in business schools so that the next generation can see the difference between window dressing a transaction or doing it for a valid business purpose. There is no global consensus on what is morally ethical, but adding it to curriculum in business schools globally sure won?t hurt the cause.

Understanding Senior Care and Elder Law

Senior care and elder law are closely related industries that seek to provide care and protection for one of our most vulnerable populations -- senior citizens. But while distinctly different, senior care and elder law often intersect when it comes to the needs of our aging family members. Understanding what each is and how it can help your elder loved one can significantly improve the lifestyle of your entire family.

Senior care is a healthcare field dedicated to providing basic assistance and medical care for seniors. The field broadly refers to three primary types of care:

In Home Care -- The type of care that allows for the highest level of independence, in home care is provided by skilled professionals in the home of the elderly person. This can include full time, part time or relief care services.

Assisted Living -- Assisted living generally refers to a community designed, built and managed in such a way as to provide long term support to seniors. Members of assisted living communities often live in their own apartment or condominium and have access to a variety of senior care services.

Nursing Care -- Nursing care is the most intensive level of care and offers full medical services including medication management. Nursing care residents live in a specialized facility staffed by nurses and their aides, and in some cases psychiatrists and medical doctors are part of the regular staff.

Elder law is a relatively new field of law that deals exclusively with legal issues related to senior citizens. This includes estate planning, wills and trusts, laws dealing with insurance and medical care, and laws that protect the elderly from neglect or abuse.

Senior care and elder law intersect in the following 2 ways:

1.) Life Decisions

There are complicated laws surrounding legal issues like wills, long term care and estate planning. These laws require legal counsel even in the most ideal situations, but what often happens is that families begin asking about these laws only after a crisis has occurred.

For instance, in the case of an elderly family member suddenly taking ill and being unable to make their own rational decisions, legal intervention is often required in order for long term care to proceed. And in cases of dementia where family members want to provide care at home; there are legal responsibilities that must be undertaken when doing so.

The best solution to these problems is to create a plan before crisis occurs.

2.) Protection from Abuse

It's unfortunate that we would need them, but there are laws in place that protect seniors from neglect or abuse. In many cases the punishment for violating these laws are severe and come with hefty prison sentences. Family members that suspect their loved ones are being mistreated can take action by invoking elder law. Authorities are required to rigorously investigate any such claims.

Senior care is ultimately governed by elder law, so developing an understanding of the two is critical to providing a lifetime of support for an elderly family member. To learn more, call a professional in home care giver or senior care provider for an immediate consultation.

We Evolved To Eat Meat, But How Much Is Too Much?

Paleo diet promoter John Durant digs into some ribs.

You won't catch John Durant in a tie. Shoes are optional, too. He has traded cubicle life for something a little wild: Promoting the diet and lifestyle of our ancestors from the paleolithic era. He's blogging and writing a book about his approach.

"For millions of years, we didn't have an obesity problem because we ate foods that our metabolism was adapted to," Durant says ? foods such as root vegetables, tubers, fish and, of course, red meat.

"We were active and lived a healthy lifestyle," he says. Durant is one of many folks following the popular meat-laden paleo diet. He packs his freezer with deer meat and has found lots of places near his home in Manhattan to buy marrow bones and organ meats, as well as paleo-friendly barbecue joints for a meal out.

But modern medicine tells us that too much meat is bad for us, so what's a consumer to do?

?

During a workout at a CrossFit gym, a gathering spot for lots of paleo-enthusiasts, Durant told me it's no longer a challenge for him to avoid the onslaught of bagels and pizza at every street corner. The paleo approach is to eliminate grains and processed food, which are relatively new to the human diet. And, as a result, Durant says, he no longer gets the spikes and dips in his moods, and he feels better.

Now, everyone from the American Cancer Society to the American Heart Association and popular food writers such as Mark Bittman tells us to eat less red meat.

But Durant says it's a meat-based diet that was fundamental to early human development. (Check out our tongue-in-cheek Time Traveler's Cookbook: Meat Lover's Edition for more on this.)

My colleague Chris Joyce has reported on how a meat-based diet helped make us smarter.

And paleoanthropologist John Hawks at the University of Wisonsin, Madison, agrees: "We definitely evolved to eat meat."

"When we look at the fossils of early Homo [sapien], we see this immediate increase in the size of the body and also increase in the size of the brain," Hawks explains.

But that was then. Very few cavemen lived long enough to get heart disease or cancer. These are the reasons we're told to limit red meat consumption now.

"It really began in a big way in the Framingham study in the 1950s," says Michael Thun, an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society.

"It [the study] found a relationship between total cholesterol and heart disease," Thun says. Over the years, there has been debate about whether high cholesterol is a cause or simply a marker of higher heart disease risks. But studies like this one helped raise the red flag about high-cholesterol foods, such as red meat.

Then, the evidence started mounting that people who ate daily servings of red meat increased their risks of developing certain cancers. For colon cancer, studies show that people who eat the most have about double the risk compared with people who eat the least red meat.

"That's been found in lots of studies," says Thun, "so it's pretty well-accepted."

Paleo enthusiast John Durant says he has thought about these studies and has heard the health experts, but he's not worried. He says lots of the people in these big epidemiological studies are sedentary and overweight.

He may be eating more red meat than the experts recommend, but he believes his paleo lifestyle, which includes running barefoot in Central Park, helps keep him thin, active and healthy. And he's not alone ? the movement is attracting some medical professionals.

Because there are no studies of people who've been following the paleo diet, Thun says, it's hard to evaluate. "There's just not been enough people eating one kind of paleolithic diet to tell."

As for the rest of us who want to know how much red meat is too much, the best evidence suggests that cutting back to two to three servings a week is a good guide.
