Learn To Travel Like The Pros With These Simple Tips

Just about everyone has to travel somewhere at some point in their lives. While some business or pleasure traveling can be enjoyable, some journeys can be boring, dangerous, expensive and full of hassle. This article contains some tips to make your travel experience better, and help you avoid some of the common pit falls.

Carry meal replacement bars with you when you travel. You never know when an unexpected delay will prevent you from eating a meal. Meal replacement bars are compact and easy to carry. An additional benefit of these bars, is that it will allow you to keep your typical meal schedule. This can help reduce jet lag, and keep your spirits up when faced with irritating delays.

Consider attaching small bells to your carry-on bag. If you are worried that someone might steal or tamper with your luggage during a flight, attach bells to it. Inexpensive, Christmas jingle bells will do nicely. The noise is likely to deter criminals. If not, the noise will draw your attention.

Look into alternatives to hotels. You may be able to find a beautiful bed and breakfast that just might make your vacation a bit more relaxing than the traditional hotel. They tend to be more quiet and quaint while offering some wonderful perks during your stay. It could be a bit more of a romantic getaway than the hotel. If you can't decide where to travel, just search on the internet about where to go.

A great travel tip is to always bring printed directions with you whenever you go on a road trip. GPS devices are great, but they can sometimes go haywire. They might lead you down the wrong road or tell you to take the wrong turn. You can avoid this by consulting your printed directions.

When traveling always let someone know where you are going and when you will return. If you're gone longer than expected follow up with that person. This simple step is a valuable safety measure. The person can follow up if you don't return on schedule. They will also know how to reach you if an emergency comes up back home.

Have a better road trip by actually going with people you actually enjoy being around. Don't plan on traveling this way unless there is some kind of friendly relationship between you and the people who would be going with you. Good companionship makes for a quicker and more enjoyable road trip for everyone involved.

Bring an over the door shoe organizer along whenever you're staying in a hotel. Being an organized traveler in a hotel can be tough. There is limited drawer, counter, and closet space. Keep your bathroom essentials, shoes, and accessories organized and in clean site by putting them in your shoe organizer as soon as you arrive.

Plan your trip early and use the time to sign up for newsletters from hotels, car rentals and airlines. Use a junk email account to handle the potential clutter but take advantage of any specials that might come your way. These newsletters will often offer discounts and specials that are not available to the general public yet.

You always want to make sure there is a barf bag accessible to you. People can become nauseous and throw up at the drop of a dime on an airplane. Even if you are not feeling ill, you never know how the person sitting next to you is going to react to the turbulence.

When traveling by plane you should bring a light jacket with you if you get chilly easily. Airplanes are typically somewhat cool and often have fans blowing air for greater circulation which can make them feel even cooler. Light blankets are often handed out but they typically do not keep much warmth.

When traveling, never take an item from someone to transport it for them. No matter their situation or how nice they may seem, this is almost always a trap to convince an unwary tourist to transport drugs or other contraband into secure areas. Even "gifts" can fall into this category.

If your cellphone will not cover long distance from the place you intend to travel to, it might be a smart idea to invest in a phone card before leaving. A phone card will make calls much less expensive and ensure that you don't accidentally make any expensive long distance calls.

If you are traveling on a cruise ship, consider departing from a "drive-up port". This option saves you money, but you might have trouble parking. Get there one day before you leave and keep your car in the hotel's lot for the length of your trip. Most hotels in these areas advertise this perk, but if you don't see it, ask about it when you call.

The next time you need to travel somewhere, be it a quick local trip with your family, a business trip or a long distance journey abroad, consider referring back to the tips in this article. By utilising some of the ideas and advice mentioned, your travelling adventure could be cheaper, easier and safer.

Quantum computing? Physicists' new technique for cooling molecules may be a stepping stone to quantum computing

Mar. 27, 2013 ? The next generation of computers promises far greater power and faster processing speeds than today's silicon-based based machines. These "quantum computers" -- so called because they would harness the unique quantum mechanical properties of atomic particles -- could draw their computing power from a collection of super-cooled molecules.

But chilling molecules to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero, the temperature at which they can be manipulated to store and transmit data, has proven to be a difficult challenge for scientists.

Now, UCLA physicists have pioneered a new technique that combines two traditional atomic cooling technologies and brings normally springy molecules to a frozen standstill. Their research is published March 28 in the journal Nature.

"Scientists have been trying to cool molecules for a decade and have succeeded with only a few special molecules," said Eric Hudson, a UCLA assistant professor of physics and the paper's senior author. "Our technique is a completely different approach to the problem -- it is a lot easier to implement than the other techniques and should work with hundreds of different molecules."

Previous attempts to create ultracold molecules were only effective with one or two specific kinds. Creating a method that can be used with many different molecules would be a major step forward because it is difficult to say which materials might be used in quantum computers or other future applications, Hudson said.

By immersing charged barium chloride molecules in an ultracold cloud of calcium atoms, Hudson and his colleagues are able to prevent most of the molecules from vibrating and rotating. Halting the molecules is a necessary hurdle to overcome before they can be used to store information like a traditional computer does.

"The goal is to build a computer that doesn't work with zeros and ones, but with quantum mechanical objects," Hudson said. "A quantum computer could crack any code created by a classical computer and transmit information perfectly securely."

Hudson's experiment makes molecules extremely cold under highly controlled conditions to reveal the quantum mechanical properties that are hidden under normal circumstances. At room temperature, molecules rocket around, bouncing into each other and exchanging energy. Any information a scientist attempted to store in such a chaotic system would quickly become gibberish.

"We isolate these molecular systems in a vacuum, effectively levitating them in the middle of nothing," Hudson said. "This removes them from the rest of the world that wants to make them classical."

The quantum mechanical world of subatomic particles deviates from the classical world that we observe with the naked eye because according to quantum mechanics, electrons can only exist at specific energy levels. In a quantum computer made of a collection of single atoms, information might be stored by boosting some atomic electrons to higher energy levels while leaving others at lower energy states. However, these atomic energy states are not stable enough to reliably preserve data, Hudson said.

"One of the challenges with atoms is that their energy states are very easily influenced by the outside world," Hudson said. "You make this beautiful quantum state, but then the outside world tries to destroy that information."

Instead of saving data in easily disrupted atomic energy states, a more robust way to store information is in the rotational energy states of molecules, Hudson said. A spinning molecule in the lowest energy rotational state could represent a binary one, while a stationary molecule could represent a binary zero.

Despite applications for quantum computing and other industries, cooling molecules to extremely low temperatures has proved a challenge. Even the simplest molecule composed of only two atoms is a far more complex system than a single atom. Each molecule vibrates and rotates like a miniature whirling slinky, and all of that movement must be stilled so that the molecule can lose energy and cool down.

A new cooling technique

To solve the ultracold molecule conundrum, Hudson and his group first created a floating cloud of calcium atoms corralled by incoming laser beams from all directions. This magneto-optical trap keeps the atoms stationary as it cools them to nearly absolute zero. They then use specialized rods with high, oscillating voltages as part of an ion trap to confine a cloud of positively-charged barium chloride molecules within the ultracold ball of calcium atoms to complete the cooling process.

For the vibrating, energetic molecules to lose heat, they must spend a significant amount of time in contact with the surrounding ultracold atom cloud. Hudson and his colleagues used barium chloride ions, molecules missing one electron, because charged molecules are easier to trap and cool than their neutral counterparts. The use of molecular ions is an essential innovation because previous efforts have demonstrated that neutral molecules ricochet off ultracold atoms without sufficient heat transfer.

"When a molecular ion and a neutral atom get close together they get in tight and bang off each other a bunch before the ion goes away," Hudson said. "When they collide like that it is very easy for the energy in one to go to the other."

While magneto-optical and ion traps are not new to the world of molecular physics, Hudson and his colleagues became the first group to combine these methods to create a cloud of ultracold molecules. This paper is the result of over four years of work spent designing, building, and testing their experiment.

"These two different technologies earned Nobel prizes for the scientists who developed them, but there wasn't really a body of knowledge about how to put these two procedures together," Hudson said.

The research is funded by the Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation.

Google Keep

Google Keep (free) is a new Google Web program for making, saving, and syncing notes. Its primary value comes from the fact that it's part of the Google ecosystem, an ever-changing world of services for creating documents, managing photos, communicating by email, voice, and video, and so on and so forth. Sign into your Google account, and hopefully, you'll never need to leave. That's the message, loud and clear. In this sense, Google Keep is most similar to Microsoft OneNote, which is tightly integrated into SkyDrive, Microsoft's online version of Office, which somewhat mirrors Google Drive, which somewhat mirrors the traditional version of Office offline? is the snake eating its own tail here?

Google Keep at present looks like a fawn taking its first steps. It's a fully formed babe, but doesn't have its metaphorical legs yet. It has basic note-taking functionality and good search (duh, it's Google), but limitations abound. Compare it with more mature services, particularly Evernote (free to $45 per year, 4.5 stars), and Google Keep gets dusted. For example, Evernote is available virtually everywhere: as a Web app, in the form of a downloadable program for Windows and Mac, as a mobile app for practically every mobile OS on the market. Google Keep, meanwhile, lives inside Google Drive and on Android devices only. No iPhone or iPad apps. No offline desktop programs. You needn't bother to ask if it's available for BlackBerry and Windows Phone users. Evernote adds tags and notebooks for a rich experience in organization and sorting. Google Keep has neither. ??

It does give you the ability to add photos to a note (so do OneNote and Evernote), and in Android (but not in the Web app) you can add a note by voice. You can dictate a note by saying, "Note to self," and have that little reminder saved straight into Keep, where it syncs with all your other Google stuff and becomes accessible online, or available for other apps and widgets on your phone to utilize if you want to, say, have that note appear on your locked screen.

The Web app invokes Google's Spartan design philosophy. Whitespace (or rather very light gray space) creates airiness and a feeling of simplicity. Rectangular notes, centered into either a list view or grid view, are sure to look well organized. Your only instructions appear at the top of the app, "Type note," which is simply how you start a new note.?

Toggling between grid view and list view changes not only the layout of the note previews, but also whether those previews display your checkboxes in to-do notes. For example, in grid view, the check boxes disappear, while in list view you can fully see them.

How to Get Google Keep
Google users can sign into their accounts, swing into the Drive tab, and... it seems from there you have to type "/keep" at the end of the URL. There isn't a button or tab to take you there. No set up is required beyond finding the section. You can start banging out your notes right away.

In the Web app, you can type notes and upload photos as notes, although there aren't any tools for rotating a photo once it's in Keep, which I found annoying when I uploaded a sideways shot of a whiteboard with meeting notes (see the slideshow). Notes can be free form text or to-do lists with check boxes.

Search, Archiving, and Other Features
As is the case in most of Google's services, "archiving" an old note is the alternative to deleting it. The Google mindset says keep everything because you never know when you'll need it. An ever-present search bar at the top further rings true to the Google way.

Search works well enough. Type a word or two, and any notes with that word appear below. If the search term appears as text in the note, it's highlighted, although when the word is part of the note title, it's not. The main page search bar doesn't look at archived notes. You have to go to the archive notes section (via an Archived Notes link at the bottom of the page) to search them.

Without any tags, folders, or notebooks to organize your notes, it's difficult to imagine how you'll find anything in Keep after a few weeks of heavy use. Evernote is the king of organization among note-taking apps, with enough options included to accommodate different kinds of users and how they look for information.

Color-coding is Keep's only such attempt at classification, but it too isn't mature. When you choose to add color to a note, that color doesn't appear on the note while it's being edited. You can only see the color added after you save the note.

One bug I found in testing the new Keep: In a to-do note, you'll sometimes see two blank entries where you can write a new to-do, and writing in the wrong one causes new empty slots to appear, cluttering up your note (see the slideshow).

It's seem ludicrous that Google Keep doesn't have any sharing options baked into the Web version, especially because of all the sharing and collaborating you can do in Google Drive. The Android app (reviewed separately) can share notes, but doesn't allow for collaboration. In fact, why isn't "note" just a type of document you can make in Google Drive? That way, it would have all the other features it's currently missing: tags, notebooks/folders for organiztion, more stability, sharing features, rich collaboration options, etc., etc., etc.

A Keeper?
As a longtime Evernote user for all my note-taking needs, I'll stick with that more mature app for now and give Google Keep a pass. Both Evernote and Google services tend to play nice with other apps, meaning you can sync information not only to all your devices, but also to other apps (for example, I sync my Evernote account with another task-management app called AwesomeNote?which also supports syncing with Google Drive). But until Google Keep adds a wider range of supported platforms and boatloads more organizational features, it's not going to add anything to my Google Drive experience.

FAA may ease 'reading device' restriction during takeoff and landing later this year

NYT FAA may announce reduced takeoff landing electronics restriction this year

By early 2014, passengers may be able to use certain electronic devices in airplane mode during takeoff and landing, according to a New York Times report. The publication's industry sources say that the Federal Aviation Administration may announce more lenient electronics policies later this year, allowing passengers to use "reading devices" during takeoff and landing -- while it's not clear which gadgets would qualify, cellphones would remain on the ban list. The FAA commissioned an industry group to study the issue of in-flight electronics use -- the team, which includes representatives from Amazon, Boeing, the CEA, FCC, and others, will announce the results of its study by July 31st.

The issue has support from key lawmakers as well. Senator Claire McCaskill is calling the FAA out on its authorization of pilots to use iPads in the cockpit and flight attendants to use devices of their own, while restricting passengers from reading books on e-readers -- "A flying copy of 'War and Peace' is more dangerous than a Kindle," she told the Times. And we'd have to agree. Until the FAA announces a policy revision, we all have no choice but to reluctantly comply with the ban, but with devices like Google Glass on the horizon, updated restrictions could not come too soon.

Obama and Netanyahu: In Israel, a show of warmth as region as heats up

President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called each other by first names in their press conference Wednesday. Syria and Iran appeared to figure prominently in their discussions.

Syria?s destabilizing civil war and unconfirmed reports of a chemical-weapons attack in the fighting leapfrogged to the top of the agenda for President Obama?s trip to Israel Wednesday.

Mr. Obama, standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at an evening press conference in Jerusalem, asserted that verification of use of chemical weapons would be ?a game-changer? and would prompt a new level of US involvement in the 2-year-old war.

The United States is currently investigating ?exactly what happened? in the attack Tuesday in northern Syria, where both sides in the conflict claim chemical weapons were used, Obama said. The confirmed use of the weapons, he said, would ?let the genie out of the bottle? for even worse mass killings and the possible transfer of the weapons to terrorists.

Obama said he was aware of the mutual accusations by the opposition and the regime of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, but he said he is ?deeply skeptical of any claim that it was in fact the opposition that used chemical weapons.?

Obama and Mr. Netanyahu emerged from several hours of talks at the prime minister?s residence with little hint of the generally cool and even tense relations that characterized the past four years.

Iran?s nuclear program and the possibilities of reviving the moribund Israeli-Palestinian peace process were clearly also key issues in the two leaders? discussions. But the prevailing theme, based on the comments each offered at their press conference, was Israel?s security in what Obama called a ?tough neighborhood that has only gotten tougher? ? and the ?unbreakable? US commitment to that security.

Netanyahu, who opened his comments by addressing Obama as ?Barack,? said he is ?absolutely convinced the president is determined to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons.?

Even as he addressed serious issues, Obama returned Netanyahu?s favor by repeatedly referring to him by his nickname, ?Bibi.?

In answer to a question about differences between the two leaders about Iran, the Israeli leader referred to what he said is a public ?misunderstanding about time? as it relates to Iran?s nuclear program.

Netanyahu called ?correct? Obama?s recent statement to Israeli television that Iran would need a year or so to build a nuclear weapon if it decided to do so. But he also said, as he has in the past, that Iran could reach what Israel sees as an unacceptable ?immunity zone? before it actually built a nuclear bomb.

Iran ?has not yet reached the red line I described in my speech? at the United Nations last September, he said, adding that Iran is still getting closer. At the UN General Assembly, Netanyahu said Iran was on track to cross Israel?s ?red line? this spring or early summer.

United app lands on Windows Phone 8, hopes to become your preferred travel companion

United app lands on Windows Phone 8, hopes to become your preferred travel companion

The United Airlines application's been available on Android and iOS for ages, and, after months of being nowhere to be found, it's now (finally) time for the Windows Phone 8 crowd to also get to experience what the mobile ware has to offer. Naturally, this means being able to access and peek many things from within the app, including, but not limited to, booking trips, checking flight status, Live Tile notifications and, of course, viewing your digital boarding pass -- which is good news for those who prefer a mostly paperless voyage. There's plenty more goodies where that came from (such as account access and a feature that pinpoints United Club locations), but you'll have to download the app in order to dig a little deeper -- link to do just that is down below.

QB Manning considers reworking contract for Cruz

NEW YORK (AP) ? Quarterback Eli Manning will consider reworking his contract if it will help keep leading receiver Victor Cruz on the New York Giants.

The two-time Super Bowl MVP indicated Wednesday at a sponsor event that the Giants haven't asked him to redo his contract to open cap space. However, he said he would consider anything that helps the team.

"I want Victor back with the Giants," Manning said, adding that he checks the newspapers every morning to make sure that Cruz has not signed with another team. "It is nerve-racking. He is anxious. He has been dealing with this contract issue for a long time, last year and into this year. I know he wants to get this settled and get back to playing football, and just worrying about that."

The Giants recently allowed Cruz to enter restricted free agency, placing a first-round tender ($2.87 million for 2012) on the popular local product from Paterson, N.J., which is about 10 miles from MetLife Stadium. New York has the right to match any offer he receives. It would receive a first-round draft choice as compensation if he leaves.

Cruz recently dumped his agent and signed with Tom Condon, Manning's agent. Manning quipped that he has even sent Condon a couple of texts regarding the talks between Cruz and the Giants.

"Get this done!'"

Realistically, Manning said he has not interfered in the talks between Cruz and the Giants. He has talked with Cruz, but it was more the usual offseason stuff about how are things going and telling him to be ready to go to work on April 15 when offseason training starts.

Manning is not opposed to reworking his contract, which runs through 2015. His cap value will be close to $21 million this season.

"If the Giants want to work something out," the 32-year-old Manning said, "I am always up for listening, figuring out what I can do to help the cause."

Tom Brady of the New England Patriots agreed to a three-year contract extension in late February that freed up nearly $15 million in salary cap room. That didn't prevent Wes Welker, his leading receiver, from signing with the Denver Broncos, a move that will make him a target for Eli's brother, Peyton.

Eli Manning insisted that no matter what teams offer, the final decision will be with Cruz, who broke the team's single-season record for yards receiving in 2011. He had 86 catches last season for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns.

"I think he likes being here," Manning said about Cruz. "I think he fits very well into our offense. I think he realizes what he's been able to do and the success. You never know, if you go to another offense, maybe it doesn't fit as well to your style. He fits very well here, and hopefully he stays here."

Manning feels the Giants have done a good job in the free-agent market, retaining left offensive tackle Will Beatty and signing Oakland tight end Brandon Myers.

"My job is to play," he said., "and (team management's job) is to put the right team out there."

Speaking at the owners' meeting in Phoenix, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he was staying optimistic that Cruz would re-sign.

"That's my position on that," he said. "I don't speculate in any of the other ways."

Manning has spoken with receiver Hakeem Nicks and expects him to be ready for the offseason after an injury-plagued year. He believes that second-year running back David Wilson has the talent to replace Ahmad Bradshaw, but that the team has to figure out how to use his abilities.

Manning started his offseason training program in mid-February. That's about two weeks earlier than usual, but the Giants (9-7) missed the playoffs last year after winning the Super Bowl the year before.

Statue of Liberty to reopen by Independence Day

A park ranger patrols Liberty Island, which was damaged in Superstorm Sandy. (John Moore/Getty Images)

The Statue of Liberty, which has been closed to the public since Superstorm Sandy struck in October, will reopen by July 4, federal officials announced Tuesday.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and New York Sen. Chuck Schumer made the announcement nearly five months after the storm shut down tours of the monument and Liberty Island. While the statue itself was not seriously harmed by the storm, several buildings on the island suffered major flooding, wiping out the island?s electrical system and sewage pumps. The main dock used by tourist ferries carrying visitors from lower Manhattan and New Jersey was also destroyed.

?It?s good news, it?s a little overdue, but at least it?s there, and now we?ll watch like a hawk to make sure that this promise is kept,? Schumer told NBC New York.

In January, Congress allocated $59 million to repair both Liberty Island and nearby Ellis Island, which also sustained major damage in the storm. But federal officials have not announced when Ellis Island will reopen. In November, more than a million artifacts had to be removed from the museum there because of fears they might not be properly preserved because of damage to the climate-control system in the building.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the country?s most popular landmarks. According to the National Park Service, roughly 3.7 million people visited the site in 2011?the last year full data was available.

MyFitnessPal app to sync data with NetPulse and Matrix 7xi equipment

It's all well and good to maintain a food diary and an exercise log on your path to get fitter, but sometimes it's a pain to enter workout stats manually. MyFitnessPal has partnered up with Johnson Health Tech and Netpulse to solve at least one part of the equation. By working together, the free MyFitnessPal app syncs to any gym equipment that uses the NetPulseOne platform, leaving the daily diet as the only entry you have to make manually. In the next few months, the app will also be integrated with Johnson Health Tech's new Matrix 7xi series of cardio equipment for automatic syncing. MyFitnessPal has worked with other solutions like Fitbit and WiThings since it opened up its API last October, and while we can't assess its effectiveness just yet, at least you won't have to wear this dorky shirt while sweating it to the oldies.

Kalyn's Kitchen?: Slow Cooker Greek Rice Recipe with Red Bell ...

I haven't moved for 25 years, and there's no question that I had completely blocked all the memories of just how awful moving really is, so it's a good thing I'm excited about the hew house!? It's now pretty much sorting through stuff and packing for the move every spare minute around here, but a few weeks ago before the new house frenzy switched into overdrive I made this delicious Slow Cooker Greek Rice with Red Bell Pepper, Feta, and Kalamata Olives with Jake.? This is one of those slow cooker recipes that could be made on the stove, but cooking the rice in the slow cooker means you don't have to watch it much at all. ? Definitely this could be a nice side dish for a meal with Greek flavors, but I think this rice also makes a nice vegetarian main dish with all the flavors going on here.? The rice didn't end up being overly photogenic, but if you like these flavors, I guarantee you'll love this rice.

Heat the olive oil and saute the rice until it's nicely browned.? Put rice in the slow cooker.

Then add the onions and cook until they start to brown, about 4-5 minutes.? Add the garlic, Greek seasoning, and dried oregano and cook a couple minutes more.

Then add the chicken or vegetable stock to the pan, scraping off any browned bits.?

Add the onion/stock mixture to the rice in the slow cooker and cook on high about 1 hour and 30 minutes. While the rice cooks, finely chop the red bell pepper.? Add it to the rice and cook 15 minutes more. Slice the olives and crumble the Feta while the red bell peppers cook with the rice. Stir in the sliced olives and crumbled Feta and cook 15 minutes more. Then stir in the parsley and lemon juice and serve rice hot. Slow Cooker Greek Rice with Red Bell Pepper, Feta, and Kalamata Olives
(Makes about 6 servings; recipe adapted from Greek Rice in Crock-Pot 365 Year-Round Recipes.)

Equipment:
I used my favorite Crock-Pot 3-1/2-Quart Slow Cooker for this recipe.

Ingredients:
1 T olive oil
1 3/4 cups Uncle Ben's Converted Rice
1 onion, chopped small
1 tsp. minced garlic
1 tsp. Greek Seasoning (I like Greektown "Billygoat" Seasoning from The Spice House.)
1 tsp. dried oregano (preferably Greek oregano)
2 cans (14 oz. each) chicken or vegetable stock (3 1/2 cups total)
1 red bell pepper, seeds removed and finely chopped
3/4 cup sliced Kalamata olives (or regular black olives will also be good)
3/4 cup crumbled Feta cheese
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
1 T fresh-squeezed lemon juice

Instructions:

Heat the olive oil in a large heavy frying pan, add the rice and saute until the rice is nicely browned (watch it carefully.)? Put the browned rice into the slow cooker.??

Add the onions and cook until they start to brown, about 4-5 minutes.? Then add the garlic, Greek seasoning, and dried oregano and cook a couple minutes more.? Add the stock and scrape the pan to remove any browned bits; then add the onion/stock mixture to the slow cooker with the rice.? Cook on high for 1 1/2 hours.

While the rice cooks finely chop the red bell peppers, and after 1 1/2 hours (or when the rice is fairly softened, but not completely done) add the bell peppers and cook 15 minutes more.? While rice and peppers cook, crumble the Feta and slice the olives, then add the the slow cooker and cook another 15 minutes.??

Chop the parsley and squeeze the lemon juice.? Check to be sure the rice is as cooked as you'd like it, then stir in the chopped parsley and lemon juice and serve hot.

Look for the comet near the crescent moon

Adam Block / Caelum Observatory

Astrophotographer Adam Block captured this view of Comet PanSTARRS amid a line of power poles near Tucson, Ariz., on March 10. For more from Block, check out the Caelum Observatory.

By Joe Rao
Space.com

Many stargazers attempting to view the Comet PanSTARRS on recent nights have been thwarted by the comet's low position in the western sky. But on Tuesday night, the thin crescent moon will lend a hand.

Over the past weekend countless observers across in North America and Europe tried ? and for the most part failed ? to see Comet PanSTARRS, in part due to its low altitude above the west-northwest horizon. The bright glare of the evening twilight sky just is also a hurdle, since it can as make the comet harder to see just after sunset.

But fret not, comet lovers! Comet PanSTARRS' position above the horizon is noticeably higher on Tuesday evening, and the moon can be used as a benchmark to point your way.

Step 1: Find clear skies
The best suggestion I can make for your comet watch is to find an observing site with the least amount of obstructions in the direction of the western part of the sky. [How to see the comet]

If you end up successfully catching a glimpse of them, the moon and the comet will not be any higher than 10 degrees above the horizon. That is about the size of your clenched held out at arm's length.

If you have a house or some trees in your line of sight, then you're going to have to find some other viewing site.

Step 2: Find the moon
In order to boost your chances of seeing Comet PanSTARRS, be sure to arrive at your viewing site in time to see the sunset. Take note of where on the horizon the sun sets.?

Now wait about 30 minutes as the sky begins to darken. Truthfully, it will still be rather bright looking toward the west a half-hour after the sunset. This was one of the main problems people have had in recent days in trying to see the comet.?

However, first things first: Let's locate the moon. Take your clenched fist and measure off 10 degrees up from that point on the horizon where the sun disappeared about a half hour before. ?Now look a bit to the right from the top of your fist. That's where the crescent moon will be.?

Seeing the moon will be a bit of a challenge in itself because it will be very narrow, appearing only about 28 hours after passing its new phase. Because of this, the lunar disk will be only 1 percent illuminated. It will be oriented with its bright sliver down, resembling a cup or a thin smile on the sky.?

If you can't see the moon with your unaided eye, then use binoculars. Once you pick it up with binoculars, you should be able to find it without optical aid.?

Adam Block / Caelum Observatory

Comet PanSTARRS stands out when seen from a high-altitude vantage point. "Here is the picture I captured ... from atop Mount Lemmon (at the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter). I run the stargazing programs up here and while hosting the show for the guests I captured this picture," Arizona astrophotographer Adam Block said in an email.

StarDate Magazine

The location of Comet Pan-STARRS low in the western horizon in March 2013 is shown in this sky map released by StarDate Magazine, a publication of McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas.

Step 3: Find the comet
With the moon found in the evening sky, it is time to use it as a guide to spot Comet PanSTARRS.

The comet will be located about 5 degrees to the left of the moon. Once again, you might not initially see it with your eyes, so use binoculars if you need to. Five degrees measures roughly "half a fist" in length.

You'll know Comet PanSTARRS when you see it. It will appear as a bright, starlike "head" with a short, stubby tail extending from the head upwards and slightly to the left from the bright end. Like the moon, once you find it with binoculars, you should, with time, be able to make it out against the bright twilight sky. ?

Comet PanSTARRS and the moon should be visible for about a half hour before they disappear into the murky haze always located near the horizon.

Not so 'Great Comet'?
Comet PanSTARRS was discovered in June 2011 by a team of astronomers using the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (or Pan-STARRS), a telescope in Hawaii. The comet is officially designated as C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) and is thought to take more than 100 million years to make a single orbit around the sun. [Comet PanSTARRS Explained (Infographic)]

Right now the brightness of Comet PanSTARRS, according to viewers who spotted it in the Southern Hemisphere, ranks at about first-magnitude on the astronomy brightness scale. That is about as bright as the brightest stars.?

Normally, a comet as bright as this would be categorized as a "Great Comet," but most observers feel that PanSTARRS does not fall into this category because it's not visible against a fully dark sky. The bright twilight background is working against making it a prominent eye-catching sight.

And the comet's dust tail is not breathtakingly long, but rather short and rather stubby. To the naked eye, not much of the tail may be visible at all, though in big binoculars or small telescopes, some say that PanSTARRS is a rather impressive sight.

Comet PanSTARRS is one of at least three comets in the night sky?that are sending a thrill through stargazers. Another comet (Comet Lemmon) is currently visible to observers in Southern Hemisphere, while the third object is Comet ISON.

Comet ISON?is a promising celestial object that was discovered by amateur astronomers in 2012 and is expected to make its closest approach to the sun in late November. The comet will be only 800,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from the sun at its closest point, and could put on a dazzling night-sky spectacle. But it could also fizzle out.

NASA astronomers and stargazers around the world are regularly tracking Comet ISON, as well as comets PanSTARRS and Lemmon as they shine in the night sky.

Ancient phallus-shaped worm described

Scientists have revealed insights into a peculiar, phallus-shaped creature discovered at a fossil site in Canada.

The animal has been identified as Spartobranchus tenuis, a species from the Cambrian period that was previously unknown to science.

The odd-looking creature was an ancient relative of acorn worms that exist today, according to researchers.

Their study, published in the journal Nature, is the first full description of the prehistoric animal.

Remains of soft-bodied worms were found in the Burgess Shale fossil beds in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada throughout the last century.

But now researchers studying the 505 million years old fossils have for the first time given a detailed insight into the lives of the bizarre beasts.

The prehistoric marine creatures were around the size of an earthworm, "but unlike an earthworm that's segmented from its front end to its back end, these guys just had three distinct body segments," said research team member Dr Christopher Cameron from the University of Montreal, Canada.

The animals' phallus-shaped anatomy consisted of a head, or "muscular proboscis", in front of a short "collar" and ended with "a posterior kind of long wormy tail which has gill slits", Dr Cameron explained. The body ended in a bulbous structure which may have helped it anchor to the sea bed.

The team's identification of Spartobranchus tenuis pushes the appearance of enteropneusts (or acorn worms) in the fossil record back a further 200 million years to the Cambrian period (545 to 495 million years ago). Previously, the oldest specimens found were from the later Triassic period (248 million to 205 million years ago).

Crucial missing link

According to Dr Cameron and colleagues, Spartobranchus tenuis reveals a crucial evolutionary link between two distinct living groups of animals: enteropneusts and pterobranchs.

Both groups belong to the hemichordates phylum of marine animals, the origins of which has intrigued scientists since its discovery in the 19th Century.

"Enteropneusts look very different from pterobranchs in as much as the former are worms, whereas the latter are tiny animals, live in tubes, are colonial and have feeding tentacles," explained Professor Simon Conway Morris from the University of Cambridge, UK, who also worked on the study.

The new research indicates that Spartobranchus tenuis was an ancient relative of both groups of animals. It shared many of the features of modern acorn worms but like pterobranchs, lived in a tube.

"By finding enteropneusts in tubes we begin to bridge this evolutionary gap," Dr Morris told BBC Nature.

Dr Cameron commented: "It's astonishing how similar Spartobranchus tenuis fossils are to modern acorn worms, except that they also formed fibrous tubes."

In many of the fossils, remains of the worms were encased in these tubes, and the team believe they lived in the structures and may have even sealed themselves in a doughnut shape within the tubes.

Spartobranchus tenuis fossils are unique to the Burgess Shale fossil bed in Canada's Yoho National Park, which is known for its preservation of soft-bodied animals from the Cambrian period.

Prof Morris added that the team's identification of the new species at the site "reinforces the magnitude of the Cambrian 'explosion', with many of the major [animal] groups evolving relatively rapidly".

Senate immigration group: National ID too costly

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators working on a sweeping immigration bill will likely abandon the idea of a new high-tech ID card for workers because it's too expensive, a key negotiator said.

That means their emerging legislation, which they've promised will crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants, likely will seek to expand a little-used system criticized as error-prone and vulnerable to fraud that employers can use to check the legal status of workers, mainly using Social Security numbers.

The system, called E-Verify, is now purely voluntary, and officials with labor and immigrants' rights groups say it would have to be greatly improved before being required nationally.

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., members of the bipartisan Senate immigration negotiating group, had championed creation of a biometric ID card instead that would use personal markers such as fingerprints to make it easy for employers to check the status of prospective hires. But Graham said cost estimates came back higher than he expected.

"That seems to have been cost-prohibitive, so we're looking at other ways to achieve the same goal," Graham told reporters this week at the Capitol.

Graham said no final decision had been made on ditching the biometric ID card idea, which had also sparked civil liberties concerns, and he declined to say how much such a card would cost. A study by the University of California, Berkeley Law School's Warren Institute last year estimated start-up costs to the government for such a program would top $22 billion.

For Graham, Schumer and the other six senators trying to finalize an immigration bill by next month, a workable employer verification system is fundamental to legislation that also would secure the border, improve legal immigration and provide eventual citizenship to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants already here. The immigration bill signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 is often criticized because it legalized nearly 3 million people while offering assurances that employers would have to verify the legal status of workers, but included no real mechanisms to ensure that happened.

Graham said that no amount of border enforcement would stop the flow of illegal immigrants without measures to keep employers from hiring them.

"If you don't control who gets a job, it doesn't matter how high the fence is," Graham said. "The best virtual fence is an employer verification system."

E-Verify was launched as a pilot program in 1997 and now is used by about 7 percent of employers. It's largely voluntary as a federal program but mandatory in some states. Draft immigration legislation by President Barack Obama, which he has said he'll offer if the Senate group doesn't come to agreement quickly enough, would make E-Verify mandatory nationally, and the Senate group is likely to take the same route.

E-Verify allows employers to electronically submit prospective workers' Social Security numbers or other information to be checked against government databases. Critics say it's error-prone because of mistakes in government records and that it has no reliable way to catch someone who is using a fraudulent Social Security number. Immigrants' rights groups also complain that workers can't easily contest disqualifications and that employers have been known to misuse the program by threatening to run workers through E-Verify if they try to organize a union.

The federal Citizenship and Immigration Services, which helps administer the program, says it's gotten progressively easier to use and more accurate.

"Improving the accuracy of the E-Verify system remains our primary goal," Soraya Correa, an associated director at the agency, told a House hearing last month.

But because of how hard it is for a worker to contest a disqualification, critics say any error rate is too high.

"The error rate is low but when applied to the entire American workforce, every workplace in the U.S., that's a problem," said Emily Tulli, an attorney at the National Immigration Law Center. "Only 7 percent of employers are currently utilizing it so if you think about taking that utilization from 7 percent to 93 percent more, it is problematic."

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce opposed E-Verify for years as cumbersome and unwieldy, but recently decided to support it as long as certain protections are in place for businesses. Randy Johnson, the Chamber's senior vice president for labor, immigration and employee benefits, said the program has improved, and for businesses, it's a reasonable price to pay as part of an overall immigration overhaul. Business supports an immigration overhaul in part because it would ensure a reliable workforce.

Businesses "see this E-Verify system as a necessary slice of the pie to move comprehensive immigration reform forward," Johnson said.

If they do expand E-Verify, senators are expected to endorse ways to make it more reliable and better at detecting ID fraud, such as by expanding the use of photo IDs in the system. For many lawmakers, especially Republicans skeptical of immigration legislation, an airtight employer verification system will be necessary for them to be able to support the bill.

But critics are skeptical that any changes would make the program acceptable.

"The system is still too error-prone," said Chris Calabrese, an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union. "It will prevent lawfully present Americans from being able to work."

Julie Spira: Google Image Search: Can It Replace Online Dating ...

It started off as an inbound phone call to my cell phone. Even though the caller ID listed the call as "private," I answered the phone since I was waiting for a return call from someone I had just spoken with.

A friendly voice on the other end said, "Hello Julie. This is Steve." As a rather common name, I wasn't sure who Steve was. Trying to stay polite, I engaged in the conversation, only to be questioned about my occupation as an online dating expert, details of my life growing up on the east coast, where I went to college and other personal information about me. Steve apparently knew me well.

Steve, it turns out, is a single guy living in Los Angeles. He doesn't believe in online dating. He isn't a member of any online dating sites. However, out of curiosity, he decided to do a search on Plenty of Fish as a non-member. Since POF is a free dating site, cost wasn't the issue. Steve just didn't believe online dating worked, but decided to dip one toe in to go fishing in a search of women in a geographic area within my age range.

When Steve found my profile photos, along with my complete profile details, he downloaded the pictures to his computer. One-by-one, he posted the photos in Google Image Search to see what information he could find out about someone named Pianobaby on POF.

As he described my life to me through his extensive Google search, Steve admitted he went "undercover" to learn more about the person behind the photos. He found my websites, watched a few videos, found my mobile phone number and mailing address. He had spent about 20 minutes doing an informal background search to find out where my favorite restaurants were and the types of music I liked. It was that easy.

Steve was well prepared for his initial phone call and I felt totally naked. I had no idea who he was. I could have hung up on him, but my curiosity took over to find out exactly what this mystery man was up to. Steve described the exact shopping center my P.O. box was located in, named the developer who renovated the property, and listed all of the theatrical performances scheduled in Los Angeles, of which I might be interested in attending. He knew the names of all of the restaurants in my neighborhood and talked at length about the one's that were no longer in business.

    Do you find this creepy?

I had no idea what Steve's last name was, or if his name was really Steve. I didn't have his phone number, but he eventually revealed his name and number to me, along with the neighborhood he lived in. His parting words to me were, "It's my goal to take you off of this dating site and sweep you off your feet. You don't need to be on an online dating site." Sound romantic? I wasn't convinced yet.

With that, we ended the conversation. Steve said he'd be busy for three months and listed his agenda, but would like to get together when he was free. I wondered whose number he'd be dialing after mine.

Did Steve really like being a cyber-sleuth? How does this affect online dating, if you don't need to sign up to become a member and you can find out someone's identity based just upon a photo they may have posted online? What happens to your business photos on Linkedin or your personal photos on Facebook if they can be easily matched with your online dating photos?

At the end of the day, we're creating permanent digital footprints wherever we go. You may think you've run away from posting on social media, but you really can't hide.

Wishing you much love and joy in cyberspace, or wherever you may roam.
