Scientists to Jupiter's moon Io: Your volcanoes are in the wrong place

Apr. 4, 2013 ? Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanically active world in the Solar System, with hundreds of volcanoes, some erupting lava fountains up to 250 miles high. However, concentrations of volcanic activity are significantly displaced from where they are expected to be based on models that predict how the moon's interior is heated, according to NASA and European Space Agency researchers.

Io is caught in a tug-of-war between Jupiter's massive gravity and the smaller but precisely timed pulls from two neighboring moons that orbit further from Jupiter -- Europa and Ganymede. Io orbits faster than these other moons, completing two orbits every time Europa finishes one, and four orbits for each one Ganymede makes. This regular timing means that Io feels the strongest gravitational pull from its neighboring moons in the same orbital location, which distorts Io's orbit into an oval shape. This in turn causes Io to flex as it moves around Jupiter.

For example, as Io gets closer to Jupiter, the giant planet's powerful gravity deforms the moon toward it and then, as Io moves farther away, the gravitational pull decreases and the moon relaxes. The flexing from gravity causes tidal heating -- in the same way that you can heat up a spot on a wire coat hanger by repeatedly bending it, the flexing creates friction in Io's interior, which generates the tremendous heat that powers the moon's extreme volcanism.

The question remains regarding exactly how this tidal heating affects the moon's interior. Some propose it heats up the deep interior, but the prevailing view is that most of the heating occurs within a relatively shallow layer under the crust, called the asthenosphere. The asthenosphere is where rock behaves like putty, slowly deforming under heat and pressure.

"Our analysis supports the prevailing view that most of the heat is generated in the asthenosphere, but we found that volcanic activity is located 30 to 60 degrees East from where we expect it to be," said Christopher Hamilton of the University of Maryland, College Park. Hamilton, who is stationed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., is lead author of a paper about this research published January 1 in Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Hamilton and his team performed the spatial analysis using the a new, global geologic map of Io, produced by David Williams of Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz., and his colleagues using data from NASA spacecraft. The map provides the most comprehensive inventory of Io's volcanoes to date, thereby enabling patterns of volcanism to be explored in unprecedented detail. Assuming that the volcanoes are located above where the most internal heating occurs, the team tested a range of interior models by comparing observed locations of volcanic activity to predicted tidal heating patterns.

"We performed the first rigorous statistical analysis of the distribution of volcanoes in the new global geologic map of Io," says Hamilton. "We found a systematic eastward offset between observed and predicted volcano locations that can't be reconciled with any existing solid body tidal heating models."

Possibilities to explain the offset include a faster than expected rotation for Io, an interior structure that permits magma to travel significant distances from where the most heating occurs to the points where it is able erupt on the surface, or a missing component in existing tidal heating models, like fluid tides from an underground magma ocean, according to the team.

The magnetometer instrument on NASA's Galileo mission detected a magnetic field around Io, suggesting the presence of a global subsurface magma ocean. As Io orbits Jupiter, it moves inside the planet's vast magnetic field. Researchers think this could induce a magnetic field in Io if it had a global ocean of electrically conducting magma.

"Our analysis supports a global subsurface magma ocean scenario as one possible explanation for the offset between predicted and observed volcano locations on Io," says Hamilton. "However, Io's magma ocean would not be like the oceans on Earth. Instead of being a completely fluid layer, Io's magma ocean would probably be more like a sponge with at least 20 percent silicate melt within a matrix of slowly deformable rock."

Tidal heating is also thought to be responsible for oceans of liquid water likely to exist beneath the icy crusts of Europa and Saturn's moon Enceladus. Since liquid water is a necessary ingredient for life, some researchers propose that life might exist in these subsurface seas if a useable energy source and a supply of raw materials are present as well. These worlds are far too cold to support liquid water on their surfaces, so a better understanding of how tidal heating works may reveal how it could sustain life in otherwise inhospitable places throughout the Universe.

"The unexpected eastward offset of the volcano locations is a clue that something is missing in our understanding of Io," says Hamilton. "In a way, that's our most important result. Our understanding of tidal heat production and its relationship to surface volcanism is incomplete. The interpretation for why we have the offset and other statistical patterns we observed is open, but I think we've enabled a lot of new questions, which is good."

Io's volcanism is so extensive that it gets completely resurfaced about once every million years or so, actually quite fast compared to the 4.5-billion-year age of the solar system. So in order to know more about Io's past, we have to understand its interior structure better, because its surface is too young to record its full history, according to Hamilton.

The research was funded by NASA, the NASA Postdoctoral Program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and the European Space Agency.

Great Business Ideas

Into today's community of business, great businesses come from thinking about what issues you can solve for individuals. What are individuals looking for and can you provide it to them?

Modern successful business owners have become big names. Who can deny that the likes of Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates all have great companies that solve problems or made people's lives simpler or more enjoyable?

In business it is often said that the first person into an untapped market will have success. But how many uptapped marketplaces are there today? Often the sheer price of entering these marketplaces is prohibitive.

Traditionally, great business ideas would mean great expense. The price of a 'bricks and mortar' business usually means rents, rates, staff, equipment, inventory etc. These are all items that have a price and it is often this cash that has to be spent before you even begin promoting your products to your potential clients.

However, with the dawn of the 'digital age' and the incredible opportunity provided by the internet, great business ideas are much simpler to put into action. Industry is becoming more information-intensive and less labour and capital-intensive. This implies that the traditional barriers to great business ideas are being removed.

The key to great business ideas.

If the world wide web is the place for great businesses, the actual key is not to begin inventing your own product or trying to take on the established companies. Who really wants to compete with the huge online stores or with start-up companies that are funded, through investment with millions of dollars?

The online business world is like the beginning gold-rush days of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. In places like Australia, Brazil, Canada, South Africa and the United States entrepreneurs would head off into the hills or the mines trying to find a few nuggets of gold that would make them a fortune.

However, it was not the individuals actually looking for the gold who made their fortunes in the gold rush. More wealth was created servicing the gold rush than from the gold that was discovered. It was the individuals selling supplies and providing services to the prospectors who made the real money.

And that is the key to great business ideas. In other words, do not dig for gold but sell the shovels. There have always been people with problems, wants, and needs. There will always be people creating solutions, goods and solutions to meet these problems, wants and needs. And, most importantly, there will always be a need for individuals connecting these two groups of people and these individuals are the merchants.

A merchant is businessperson who trades in products or solutions that were produced by others, in order to earn a profit when these are sold to somebody who wants or needs these products or solutions.

The modern online merchant is known as an affiiate on the internet and affiliate marketing is one of the great business ideas of the contemporary age. The internet is a giant marketplace where individuals can come to trade products. These products can be actual products or electronic products that the customer downloads. The online affiliate simply connects the customer with the supplier and gets compensated with a commission.

Affiliate marketing is online business structure where you, as a supplier, promote the products or solutions of a vendor and get compensated a percentage when somebody buys the products or solutions from you. Affiliate marketing is a well-known way for budding online business owners who are looking for great business ideas. You do not need any inventory, you can offer what is currently popular and what individuals want. You do not have to worry about any of the fulfilment or delivery of the item as the vendor does all this for you.

The online affilate marketer does not make or produce the item. He doesn't deal with inventory or shipping either. In most cases, the online affilate does not even have to make the ads that promote the product or process the payment. All the online affiliate marketer does is connect the customer with the supplier and get compensated a percentage.

Clickbank is a electronic industry marketplace which sells products that the customer can download instantly. It has paid over $2 billion in commissions in the last 10 years. If you had a tiny slice of that revenue does that count as a great business idea?

All of this is now possible thanks to the digital economy. Once you have learned online marketing as a skill-set, you will be able to write your pay cheque for life.

Obama comforts 5-year-old at White House Easter Egg Roll

President Barack Obama consoles Donovan Frazier during the boy's Easter egg roll. (Jason Reed/Reuters)

Taking a turn as comforter-in-chief, President Barack Obama on Monday consoled a 5-year-old boy, distraught after losing his Easter egg roll, with a hug and a kind, "Shake it off."

The boy, Donovan Frazier, and his dad, Donnie Frazier, 35, came from Scranton, Pa., for the annual celebration. They joined some 30,000 Americans from all 50 states who got tickets for the festivities on the South Lawn of the White House. There, in the spring sunshine, groups of about 10 kids at a time raced to see who would be the first to push their hard-boiled Easter egg with a spoon across the finish line.

The younger Frazier apparently did not win, and did not take it well, slumping on the grass and crying. Obama stopped to comfort him.

"Here, you want the egg? You get to keep it. Shake it off. Shake it off. There you go," the president said, according to a pool report from Alex Leary of the Tampa Bay Times.

The entire Obama family attended the event?the president, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia. A costumed Easter Bunny and "Kid President" (viral video maker Robby Novak) were also on hand. Obama and Frazier (Jason Reed/Reuters)

Thinking Oakland Baseball | The Oakland Journal

oakland_baseball_2013Baseball as a youth sport is on the decline nationally. Little League which accounts for about two thirds of the recreational programs went from 2.5 million in 1996 to 2 million in 2010.

The National Sporting Goods Association put the total number at 3.4 million youth players in 2010, and ?there has been no decline in the number of high school baseball programs which is good indicator on the real staying power of baseball.

Locally, the Wyckoff-Franklin Lakes Patch reported on the drop in numbers for baseball and softball that has led to shared services and potentially a single league for those towns? But the same article?quotes?Recreation Commissioner Mike Guadagnino as saying the same is not true in Oakland where the numbers are holding steady.

Many attribute baseballs falling numbers to competition from other sports like soccer, football, basketball, and lacrosse which offer a faster paced playing environment. The constant play appeals to children, and parents see added health benefits in the children running around for a couple of hours a week.

On the other hand, some parents encourage their children to participate in baseball because it offers a different benefit from the faster sports, more of a ?thinking man?s game? that requires patience, advanced skills and thought.

The Journal decided to do some thinking on Oakland baseball and reached out to Oakland Baseball Commissioner Marty O?Brien to get a better picture of why the thinking man?s game continues to thrive in Oakland.

Thinking Oakland Baseball with Marty O?Brien

What?s the best part about being involved with Oakland baseball/softball?
It?s rewarding to know that I?m playing a part in affording Oakland kids the same opportunity I had as a kid to be safe and have fun playing baseball with friends. ?But the absolute best part is when I see the roller-coaster of emotions by the kids during the games. ?Little do they know now, but as I realized myself, they?re actually learning about themselves and each other by what they experience in Oakland baseball; and maturing with every game and practice they participate. ?So, I?m proud of being responsible for a program that indirectly makes a positive life impact on many kids.

What kind of special events are planned for the baseball/softball season?

Opening Ceremonies

Every year, baseball & softball always host a wonderful Opening Day parade with each team showing off their hand-made banners; and mini-carnival with food, drink & rides.

This year, it?s on Saturday May 4th from 9am to 11:30am. ?Of course, each division from K-8 plays games (from mid-April through early June). ?The Minors & Majors division holds an All-Star Game with a live rendition of our National Anthem and a play-by-play announcer.

Also, every year Oakland Travel Baseball?s 12U Gold Team participates in a week long tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park near the Baseball Hall of Fame. ?For casual and rabid fans alike, there is no better baseball experience than to attend and enjoy this event.

I encourage all Oakland Baseball fans to drive the 3 hours and stay a night or two to not just watch baseball games, but to experience why baseball is weaved into the fabric of America.

Baseball games end with a ?winner? and a ?loser.? How do you help kids deal with losing a game?
As the Commissioner, I personally have only an indirect impact over how kids cope with wins or losses. The ultimate responsibility falls on the kids? parents. ?The Manager/Coach can only attempt to introduce and reinforce a ?win with humility ? lose with dignity? philosophy.

The administration of the Oakland baseball/softball program must be very time-consuming, can you give us an idea of how many players and coaches are involved?
Oakland Baseball consists of 29 Recreation Teams from Grades K-8 (about 350 kids and 100 coaches) and 11 Travel Teams (about 130 kids and 35 coaches). ?Yes, it?s very time-consuming running Oakland Baseball. ?But it?s very rewarding knowing that I?m contributing to the youth of Oakland.

How can team sports help prepare kids for life outside of sports?
Team sports offers kids an outlet outside of school and their homes to enhance their ability to share responsibility towards achieving a common goal. ?When a child participates on a team, they feel accountable to do their part towards winning a game or helping the team improve their standing.

Team sports also creates the opportunity for kids to develop empathy so they begin to help and encourage struggling teammates. ?Youth team sports is in my opinion a training ground to develop a well-rounded person who can arguably manage ?life? better than those who do not participate in team sports.

Oakland Baseball

What makes you want to be involved in Oakland Rec, specifically baseball/softball?
I had a wonderful youth sports experience in my hometown of Bergenfield. ?I was blessed to have had great volunteer coaches ? most of whom had no kids of their own on my teams ? who selflessly donated their time and energy to foster a safe, fun and enriching environment.

I look back on my youth sports experience as one of a few key foundations in my life. ?So my motivation to be involved in Oakland Baseball is to do my part for the program to make a similar impact on the kids who participate.

Are there any coaches today who used to play in Oakland Rec when they were kids?
We have a few coaches who not only grew up & played Oakland Rec, but now raise a family here. ?But we do have one assistant coach on a travel team (currently completing his certification) who is finishing college and had played baseball for IHHS.

I just introduced a ?Coaches Apprentice? program that I hope will become successful. ?It?s designed to connect young people with a more seasoned manager/mentor so they can hone their skills and eventually earn a managerial position and retain it based on their love of coaching, not because their tenure coincides with their kids?.

What do you enjoy most about being involved in kids? sports?
Those special moments when the ?underdog? kid or team does something spectacular and EVERYONE (even the opposing team & parents) stands up & cheers.

Sometimes there are distractions caused by ?sideline parents.? How do you handle a parent who might be disrupting the game or putting too much pressure on the kids?
Oakland Recreation (not just baseball) has an established Code of Conduct and Zero Tolerance Policies which govern behavior. ? When registering their children, each parent checks a box which states they read & agree to comply. So if a violation occurs and is either witnessed by an official or is made known in writing to an official, it will be dealt with according to Oakland Recreation Bylaws.

Baseball & Softball Parade

Can you share with us the work that goes into running Oakland?s baseball/softball program?
Do you have enough space? ?I?m not alone in my efforts. ?So I want to thank especially Mike Guadagnino (Rec Chairman), Lori Dent (Rec Secretary) and Jeff Cohn (Travel Director). ?Jim Fuhrman has had no kids in the program for 3 years now, but every year agrees to coach when needed and run the Umpire program. ?My Division Coordinators are Lou Renshaw (T-Ball), Rick McNamee (Farm), Julio Morales (Minors), Mike Sears (Majors) & Pete Mazzilli (AAA). ?I thank them and all the volunteer Managers and Assistant Coaches committed to delivering a positive experience for our kids. ?Dan Logatto from Softball is a valued partner of the baseball program, as is Oakland DPW, IHHS Coach George Hill and Ultimate Sports America.

We work on baseball ?stuff? 9 of the 12 months of the year. ?We ?detox? from August through October and then begin planning for the next season in November. ?The only exception will be this September which is when we?ll hold Travel Baseball Tryouts.

Once Rec registrations begin in January, the roller coaster attaches to the chain & begins its ascent. ?Once we get a handle on numbers, the roller coaster is released from the chains. We feverishly begin writing PO?s for supplies and uniforms from the FLOW Bid Sheet - managing under budget and ensuring shipments are on time & correct. ?We unbox, store, and then distribute (to the field or equipment bags) as well as keep the storage closet as neat as possible. ?We throw a TON of boxes in the recycling dumpster!

We recruit and appoint coordinators who help operate Rec divisions (Manager/Coach selection, driving certification, holding drafts, messaging parents, collecting fees & then depositing with the Borough, organizing picture day, distributing uniforms, coordinating & scheduling practices & games that don?t overlap, coordinating umpires, ordering & distributing trophies, etc.).

The Travel Director (Jeff Cohn) & I register teams in leagues and tournaments. ?We handle the travel umpire funding cycle between the Borough, Sports Association and the Umpires; and its requisite paper trail. ?The master calendar, lighting schedule and content on baseball website is updated regularly and maintained. ?We decide if it?s too cold, wet or dark to play.

A ton of e-mail and phone calls are handled ? from general questions to serious stuff. ?Sometimes unfortunately we have to handle on-field disputes & diffuse situations. ?We send out online, anonymous surveys and then consider the results in an effort to improve the program. ?Volunteers & I groom fields on the weekends and some weekdays (especially if their wet). ?We coordinate maintenance requirements & field improvement requests with DPW. ?We organize clinics for coaches & work closely with Ultimate Sports on programs for our kids. ?We schedule fields for outside renters that generate revenue for Oakland Rec?s Trust Fund. ?I also participate in monthly Oakland Recreation Commission meetings.

Best of all, I have the honor to be a 1st year assistant coach on the 10U Oakland Braves Travel Team ? a great group of boys I?m beginning to know. ?They bring me back to my youth baseball experience and fuel my motivation to continue to make this time & effort investment to operate Oakland?s Baseball Program.

Work

I'd say the inherent value of work is that it produces something, whatever that may be. And obviously there's a thing as too much work. For people, overwork leads to a drop in health and morale, which in turn would cause a drop in efficiency, all things people would prefer to avoid happening.

As for automated, industrial work, the limit is rather different. You can turn the automation off when the workers go home, and start it up the next day, saving x amount of hours of fuel, but if the machines are capable of working 24 hours a day, and turning them off does nothing but delay the completion of whatever task they're working on, then there's no reason to really turn them off.

Whatever the factories are making, they're not going to continue on indefinitely, they're going to keep running until they finish making five thousand cars, or fifty thousand microchips, or whatever else, and then they'll stop until something else needs to be made. Turning the factory off does absolutely nothing but spread the process out for longer or make some other factory pick up the slack.
